Spanish Exchange Index 35 (IBEX 35)

The Spanish Exchange Index 35 (IBEX 35) is an index which features the 35 most liquid stocks that are traded in the Madrid Stock Exchange General Index. This index is reviewed twice per year. If adjustments are required due to changes in liquidity for the relevant companies, then adjustments are made to the index. This means that companies can float in and out of the index, depending on performance. The MFF, or Mercado Español de Futuros Financieros maintains the trading for options and futures for the IBEX 35. The MFF is a subsidiary of the Bolsas y Mercados Espanyoles.

The Bolsas y Mercados Espanyoles, or, BME is the fourth largest exchange operator in Europe. The BME calculates and publishes the IBEX 35 in real time. This allows investors to get present and accurate information on the IBEX 35 when they need it. The IBEX 35 is known as the most important stock market index for Spain’s primary stock exchange, the Bolsa de Madrid. However, the Madrid General Stock Exchange Index is also extremely important. The Bolsa de Madrid has been in operation since 1992. So, this exchange is newer than other stock exchanges, however, it is extremely significant.
