JSE Exchange Charts

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange, or JSE, is a stock exchange that is based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The JSE is the oldest and largest stock exchange in all of Africa. This exchange features hundreds of stocks and has monthly trade volumes in the billions of dollars. The JSE was originally created by mining companies in 1887 as a means of raising funds. The funds that the mining companies raised through selling shares helped to finance mining projects. The JSE is still heavily dominated by mining companies as mining is a popular commercial activity in the region. The JSE operates from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday – Friday in the local time.

FTSE/JSE Africa Index Series (FTSE/JSE)
The FTSE/JSE Africa Index Series is an index that is offered on the JSE which features a list of notable African companies across many sectors. The FTSE Group partnered with JSE Limited to create this index. The FTSE Group is an organization that is renowned for creating indices around the world.

The FTSE/JSE Africa Index Series took over from the JSE Actuaries Index. This replacement took place on June 24th, 2002. Since then, the FTSE/JSE Africa Index Series has been the dominant index on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The FTSE/JSE Africa Index Series provides an excellent way for investors to purchase securities from African companies.

South Africa 40 (SA40)
The South Africa 40 is an index which features the top 40 companies listed on the JSE. These companies are weighted by market capitalization. Industry Classification Benchmark standards are used to calculate the SA40 index. Trades can be made on both the capital of the index and the total return versions. The SA40 is also suitable for the development of financial products such as ETFs, warrants, index funds, and certificates. So, the SA40 has a lot of flexibility.
