The Stock exchange was founded in 1792 and is owned and operated by a company named Intercontinental Exchange. The NYSE operates on the trading floor rather than online, which is located at 11 Wall Street, Lower Manhattan, New York City, New York. The exchange operates 5 days a week, Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET, with the exception of some holidays. The exchange initially operated in an open outcry auction market environment, but later changed in 2007 as all NYSE stocks could be traded via its electronic hybrid market which allowed for orders to be executed immediately. As the NYSE is very popular and successful, they have produced various indexes, see some of the most prominent charts below.

NYSE Charts

NYSE Composite Index (NYSE: NYA)
As the NYSE is the largest exchange in the world, they have produced one of the most important and widely used index charts known as the NYSE Composite Index (NYSE: NYA). This index was established in the mid 1960s and was created with a base value of 50 points equal to the 1960s yearly close but was later revaluated in 2003 where it’s new base value was equal to 5000 points to the 2002 yearly close. This index was created to represent the value of all the stocks trading at the New York Stock Exchange, rather than a select few like the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

The stocks listed on the NYSE Composite Index include American depositary receipts, real estate investment trusts, tracking stocks, and foreign listings. Among these listings are over 2000 stocks, over 1600 of which are from United States based companies, and over 360 are from foreign based companies. Among the top 100 listed companies in the index, 55 of them are foreign based companies.

NYSE Arca Major Market Index (XMI or MMI)
The NYSE Arca Major Market Index, formerly known as the AMEX Major Market Index is a prestigious price-weighted stock market index made up of the top 20 Blue Chip industrial stocks of major US corporations. The index was established in 1983 with the base price and value set at 200.

NYSE Bitcoin Index (NYXBT)
The New York Stock Exchange launched the NYSE Bitcoin Index (NYXBT) on May 19, 2015 which will be used to represent the daily US Dollar value of one Bitcoin. The index is based on the transaction occurring on the Coinbase Exchange and a select few other prominent exchanges. The NYSE’s decision to launch such an index was viewed as a significant step forward for Bitcoins main adoption into the financial system.
