Nikkei-TOCOM Commodity Index
This index was created in 2002 and was formerly known as the TOCOM Index until 2006. The index is compiled of all the listed commodities on the Tokyo Commodities Exchange (precious metals, oil, rubber and agricultural product & sugar). The index is based on all the price levels of the commodities listed and gives an overall indication of the TOCOM market as a whole. This index is very well known as it is the first commodities index of its kind published by a commodities futures exchange. The Nikkei-TOCOM Commodity Index has a strong emphasis on transparency and publishes all of it’s compiled data so that anyone can calculate and verify the index for themselves. The index is primarily used as tool to hedge risk as the index gives the overall price levels of the TOCOM market as a whole. This information can be used as a tool to hedge against price inflation and is therefore used by commercial investors in their hedging strategies. As well, the Nikkei-TOCOM Commodity Index acts as a benchmark for the assessment of commodity-based indices.
Nikkei-TOCOM Sub Commodity Indexes
Apart from the primary Nikkei-TOCOM Commodity Index, there are 16 sub commodity indexes that use the same method of calculations to develop and become benchmarks for each commodity sector. These sub commodity indexes are calculated daily with the use of the daily settlement price of each commodity. See a list of the sub commodity indexes below.
