The telecommunications in Australia was all managed via government entities prior to the start of the privatization in 1997 when Telstra Corporation gained the major share of the Australian market when the government sold its shares in the company.
Telstra now offers telecommunications and information services for both domestic and international clientele.

- Retail – This includes internet service, mobile broadband, telephone, pay television and more.
- Global Enterprise – This segment manages business and government services.
- Operations – This segment manages overall planning, design, engineering and architecture and construction of Telstra networks, and information technology.
- Wholesale – Products and services delivered over Telstra networks and associated support systems to other carriers, carriage service providers and internet service providers.
When David Thodey took over as CEO in 2010, Telstra became more focused on customer service which has defined them as being one of the most respected companies in Australia.
